Floating Floor for Solid Bamboo Flooring

GreenWood Product Company’s PREMIUM bamboo flooring™ and Handscraped bamboo flooring may be floated over a sub-floor within size limitations. This product is installed in the same manner as other floating floors. The following are some guidelines to be followed:

  1. DO NOT FLOAT BAMBOO FLOORING OVER A RADIANT HEAT SYSTEM.
  2. Acclimate the flooring outside of the boxes for a minimum of 5 days in the final, humidity controlled, environment in which the flooring is to be installed.
  3. A vapor barrier (minimum 6 mil polyfilm, 10 mil recommended) MUST BE used to prevent moisture migration to the flooring. Ensure that the vapor barrier is continued 1 1/2 to 2 inches up all walls. Repair any damage to the vapor barrier before covering with flooring.
  4. The width of the floor should not exceed 15 feet. Anything wider requires an expansion joint. Total length of the floor is not to exceed 30 feet without an expansion joint. Allow 1/2" TO 5/8" expansion space between flooring and the base plate or wall.
  5. Use a high-density underlayment such as Whisper Wool ™ by Nature’s Acoustics.  Follow manufacturer’s installation procedures.
  6. Use glue recommended for floating floors such as Frankin Titebond 2 ™ (www.franklinadhesives.com). Follow the manufacturer’s instructions as to application. It is recommended that the glue be applied to the top and bottom of the groove..
  7. Use straps to pull the sides of the planks together. Keep the straps in place until the glue has set (follow manufacturer’s guidelines).
  8. Clean-up excess glue before hardening. Follow the manufacturer’s clean-up instructions.
  9. Allow the glue to completely cure before walking on the flooring. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions.

Moisture and/or humidity control within the space is necessary to prevent expansion or shrinking of the floor. It is required  that humidity be maintained between 30 and 50 percent and there MUST BE a moisture barrier installed between the sub-floor and bamboo flooring.
